Our curriculum
approach is based primarily on thematic work with a subject
focus which is supported by detailed programmes of work
especially in the areas of English, Mathematics and Science.
The work is designed to ensure that the children have a
balanced education where time is spent on different subjects,
giving the children the opportunity to acquire skills and
knowledge, and experience different types of learning. Strategies
for teaching that the school uses are; group work, individual
study, problem solving, investigative work, and creative
work. Teachers make decisions as to which strategies will
be used depending on the nature and purpose of the activity.
Our
teachers plan on a termly basis following the school’s
long-term plans. From these termly plans they identify the
specific learning objectives for the week and the activities
that will enable the children to acquire these skills or
knowledge. The activities are differentiated to the needs
of the particular children in the class.
Subject
areas within the Curriculum
Whilst much of our work is thematic, we recognise that subject
areas have their own vital role and we combine these skills
and concepts into our topic work.
English, Mathematics, Science, I.C.T. and R.E form the core
curriculum. Design and Technology, PE, History, Geography,
Arts/Craft, Personal/Social & Health Education and Music
form the other National Curriculum subjects.
